Baches in The Wairarapa is a sheltered beach break that does not work very often, with summer in particular tending to be flat. The best conditions occur when a South swell—which is just as likely to be a local windswell as a distant groundswell—combines with an offshore wind direction from the Northeast. The spot offers some shelter from southeast winds and remains surfable in light onshore conditions. The location features beach breaks offering both lefts and rights, along with offshore left and right-hand reef breaks; it performs best around a rising high tide. It is generally an uncrowded break, even when working, though surfers should watch out for rocks.
