📍 Local Knowledge

Airport Rights in Wellington is an exposed reef break that does not work very often, with summer in particular tending to be flat. The best conditions occur when a South swell, consisting of a mix of groundswells and windswells, combines with an offshore wind direction from the North. There is no shelter from cross-shore breezes at this location, and the break features a right-hand wave over the reef. Even when there are waves, it is not likely to be crowded, though surfers should take care to avoid rocks and other obstacles. The best time of year for surfing Airport Rights with consistent, clean waves is during autumn, particularly the month of May.
