Fort Ebey in Washington State is a sheltered reef break that only works occasionally, requiring the right combination of swell and wind to become surfable. It handles both wind and groundswells, with the ideal swell direction from the west-northwest. Offshore winds from the east create the best conditions, and even when it’s breaking, the spot is typically uncrowded. The best surf at Fort Ebey occurs when a WNW swell aligns with easterly offshore winds, with winter, especially December, offering the most consistent chances for clean, rideable waves.
