Elwha in Washington State is a tide-sensitive river mouth/point break with 3–4 distinct spots that can fire depending on swell size, direction, and tide. It requires a powerful west to northwest swell to become rideable and is known for being particularly fickle with tide shifts. The best conditions occur under offshore winds from the south to southwest, which help clean up the wave faces. When the elements align, Elwha can deliver high-quality surf, especially in winter, with January offering the most consistent windows of clean swell.
