📍 Local Knowledge

Matagorda in Texas is an exposed beach break with fairly consistent surf, especially during the hurricane season. It performs best when an east swell combines with offshore winds from the northwest. The waves are usually local windswells, though groundswells can occur, and the break favors right-hand waves. Even when the surf is good, it is unlikely to be crowded. Surfers should beware of rips, obstacles, sharks, and jellyfish. The best time for consistent, clean waves is during Winter, with December being the most reliable month.
