Tonel is a reasonably exposed beach and point break in South Portugal that offers quite consistent surf, with Winter being the best time of year for surfing, featuring a left-hand point break. The most favorable conditions are a West swell from windswells or groundswells combined with offshore winds from the Northeast. The break's quality isn't affected by the tide. The spot is unlikely to be crowded, even when there are waves, but surfers should be aware of strong rips. The best time for consistent, clean waves is typically in December.
