📍 Local Knowledge
Salga on Ilha de São Miguel in the Azores is an exposed right-hand reef and point break that usually has rideable surf when swell energy arrives, picking up predominantly west-northwest swells with some contribution from southern swells as well. It works best with offshore winds from the north or northeast, which help to clean up the wave faces, and can be hit-or-miss in terms of consistency—some days hold fun peaks while others stay small and weak. The bottom is mainly uneven rocky reef, creating defined peaks and shaping the break but also presenting hazards and tricky sections. Salga stays relatively uncrowded, offering a quiet line-up when conditions are good. The best month to surf Salga for cleaner, more consistent waves is August.
