πŸ“ Local Knowledge

Praia Formosa in Portugal is an exposed beach and reef break that offers fairly consistent surf when Atlantic swells are running. The spot works best when southwest to west swells pair with light or offshore winds from the northeast, creating cleaner lefts and rights over a mix of sand and rock. It’s surfable across most tides, though the rocky sections near the reef demand awareness, especially on lower tides. Crowds here tend to be moderate, making it less hectic than Madeira’s more concentrated surf zones. Hazards include strong rips, uneven reef, submerged rocks, and occasional surge against the cliffs. While Praia Formosa can break year-round, the most reliable clean, rideable waves typically arrive during autumn and winter.
