📍 Local Knowledge
Praia Da Areia Branca is an exposed river break/beach break in Central Portugal (Lourinhã) that offers fairly consistent surf and works year-round, featuring both left and right-hand waves with multiple, shifting peaks. It is a suitable spot for all levels of surfers, especially beginners and intermediate surfers. The most favorable conditions are a West, Northwest, or Southwest swell combined with offshore winds from the East or Northeast. The break works best around low tide when the tide is falling, but can be surfed at all tides due to sandbar changes. The spot can get crowded in summer but is uncrowded in winter. Surfers should be aware of strong currents/rips with bigger swells, as well as urchins and rocks near the river mouth. The best time for consistent, clean waves is typically during Winter, particularly December and the season from October to March.
