πŸ“ Local Knowledge

Ponta Negra on Ilha de SΓ£o Miguel in the Azores is an exposed beach break that offers rideable surf with both lefts and rights over a predominantly sand bottom when swell is present, though wave quality can vary with sandbank shape. The break tends to work best with southern and southeast swells that wrap into the coast and offshore winds from the north or northeast, which help clean up the faces, and it can hold surf across most tide levels. Conditions are often small to modest on typical days but can build into more fun waist-to-chest high waves when bigger swell arrives. Ponta Negra can see more surfers on good days compared with remote reef breaks, but it generally stays accessible without heavy crowds. The best month to surf Ponta Negra is August.
