Matadouro in Portugal is a versatile and consistent reef and point break located in the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve, suitable for all levels from beginner to advanced. The spot offers A-frame peaks, generally featuring mellow lefts and better quality rights, breaking over a sand and rock bottom with exposed reef plates. The main break requires moderate swell to work and is optimal with Northwest or West swells paired with light, offshore East winds. Mid- to high-tide conditions are preferred, as low tide exposes the shallow, rocky reef. Due to its accessibility and favorable conditions for learning, crowds are moderate and often include surf schools. Hazards include submerged rocks, reef sections, and occasional rip currents near the main rock formation. While surfable year-round, the most consistent and powerful waves arrive during the winter months (November to February).
