Barra do Douro is an exposed river break in North Portugal that offers reasonably consistent surf, though it is often flat during summer. The most favorable conditions are a West groundswell combined with offshore winds from the East. The river break provides both left and right waves and offers good surf at all stages of the tide. The spot is sometimes crowded, and surfers should be aware of dangerous rips. The best time for consistent, clean waves is typically in December.
