Tomahawk Beach on the Otago Peninsula is an exposed beach break with quite reliable surf that can be surfed year-round. The best surf occurs with a south swell and offshore winds from the north, typically during autumn—most often in March—when clean, rideable waves are most consistent. The break receives a mix of groundswells and windswells, produces both lefts and rights, and is rarely crowded. Surfers should take care due to strong rips and the potential presence of sharks.
