Taieri Mouth in Dunedin is an exposed beach and river bar break with reasonably consistent surf that can be surfed year-round. The best surf occurs with a south swell and offshore winds from the west-northwest, typically during winter—most often in June—when clean, rideable waves are most common. Groundswells and windswells are equally likely, the break produces both lefts and rights, and it works best around low tide. The area is generally uncrowded even when the surf is up, but surfers should watch out for strong rips and the potential presence of sharks.
