π Local Knowledge
St Clair in Dunedin is an exposed beach and point break that usually has waves and works year-round. The best surf occurs with a south swell and offshore winds from the north-northwest, typically during autumnβmost often in Mayβwhen clean, rideable waves are most common. Most of the surf comes from groundswells, and the beach break offers both left and right-hand waves, working well at all stages of the tide. Itβs a fairly popular spot and can sometimes get crowded. Surfers should be aware of sharks, strong rips, and the presence of crowds.
