π Local Knowledge
Moeraki in North Otago is an exposed beach and reef break with fairly consistent surf that can work year-round. The best surf occurs with a north-northeast swell and offshore winds from the west-southwest, typically during summerβmost often in Decemberβwhen clean, rideable waves are most common. Groundswells and windswells are equally likely, with the beach offering both left and right-hand waves and a right-hand reef break. It works best around high tide and is rarely crowded. Surfers should be aware that sharks may be a hazard at this break.
