π Local Knowledge
Long Beach on the Otago Peninsula is a fairly exposed beach break that does not work very often and has no clear seasonal pattern. The best surf occurs with a northeast swell and offshore winds from the south-southwest, typically during summerβmost often in Augustβwhen clean, rideable waves are most likely. Most of the surf here comes from groundswells, the beach produces both left and right-handers, and it works best around high tide on a rising tide. Even when itβs breaking the lineup is usually quiet, though limited space means crowding can quickly make surfing hazardous.
