Karitane Point in Otago is an exposed point break that doesn’t work very often and has no particular seasonal pattern. The best surf occurs with a north-northeast swell and offshore winds from the south-southwest, typically during summer—most often in December—when clean, rideable waves are more likely. Most of the surf comes from groundswells, and the break works best around high tide. It is rarely crowded, but surfers should take care due to sharks and strong rips.
