Kakanui River Mouth in North Otago is an exposed beach and river bar break that is usually a safe bet and works year-round. The best surf occurs with a south-southeast swell and offshore winds from the west, typically during winter—most often in June—when clean, rideable waves are most consistent. It receives a mix of groundswells and windswells, offering both left and right-hand waves and remains surfable at all stages of the tide. The lineup is rarely crowded, but surfers should be aware that sharks have been sighted in the area.
