Aramoana Spit in Otago is a quite exposed beach break with fairly consistent surf that can be surfed year-round. The best surf occurs with a northeast swell and offshore winds from the southwest, typically during winter—most often in August—when clean, rideable waves are most reliable. Most of the surf here comes from groundswells, the beach produces both lefts and rights, and the area is generally uncrowded even when it’s breaking. Surfers should be aware that sharks have been sighted at this location.
