Carnon is an exposed beach break that offers its most consistent surf during the autumn and winter months, while the summer is typically flat. It performs best when an east or southeast swell combines with offshore winds from the north or northwest. Most of the waves arrive in the form of local windswells, producing multiple left and right-hand peaks across the sandy shoreline. The surf is generally rideable at all stages of the tide, though the banks often hold their shape best around a rising mid-tide. While the expansive beach helps to spread out the crowd, it can become busy on weekends when the conditions are optimal. Surfers should exercise caution and be mindful of hazards such as strong lateral currents and shifting sandbars. The best conditions reported for surf at Carnon occur when an East-southeast swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the North.
