Plage de Mayarko in Nouvelle-Aquitaine is a fairly exposed beach and reef break that offers its most consistent surfing opportunities during the autumn and winter months, while the summer is typically flat. It performs best when a strong west or northwest swell combines with offshore winds from the east or northeast. Most of the waves arrive in the form of grounded Atlantic swells, producing a variety of left and right-hand peaks across the rocky and sandy shoreline of Saint-Jean-de-Luz that can become quite punchy and hollow when a solid swell is running. The surf is notably versatile and remains rideable at all stages of the tide, though it often provides the cleanest faces on a rising mid-tide. While it is a popular and scenic spot nestled in a bay, the layout of the peaks usually allows for a manageable lineup even when the conditions are optimal. Surfers should exercise caution and stay alert for hazards such as strong lateral currents and numerous submerged rocks that become more prominent at lower tides. The best conditions reported for surf at Plage de Mayarko occur when a West-northwest swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the East-northeast.
