La Flotte in Poitou-Charentes is a fairly sheltered beach and reef break that offers its most consistent surfing opportunities during the autumn and winter months, while the summer is typically flat. It performs best when a strong west or southwest swell combines with offshore winds from the north or northeast. Most of the waves arrive in the form of local windswells or Atlantic swells that wrap around the Île de Ré, producing a variety of left and right-hand peaks across the sandy and rocky shoreline that can become quite punchy when a solid swell is running. The surf is notably versatile and remains rideable at all stages of the tide, though it often provides the cleanest faces on a rising mid-tide. While it is a popular destination on the island, the lineup usually remains manageable when the conditions are optimal. Surfers should exercise caution and stay alert for hazards such as strong lateral currents and submerged rocks near the harbor and headlands. The best conditions reported for surf at La Flotte occur when a West swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the North-northeast.
