📍 Local Knowledge

Chassiron on the Île d'Oléron is a renowned exposed reef break located at the northernmost tip of the island, characterized by its very reliable surf (though, like much of the region, it can go flat in the summer). Unlike the shifting beach breaks nearby, this is a distinct left-hand reef break that performs best around low tide. It draws energy from an equal mix of windswells and groundswells, favoring a Southwest swell direction. Surfers need to be highly competent here, as the combination of submerged rocks and strong rips presents a significant hazard. The best conditions occur when a Southwest swell meets Southeast offshore winds, with October and the Winter months offering the most consistent clean waves.
