Cap Ferret Chenal in Nouvelle-Aquitaine is a fairly exposed beach and sandbar break that offers its most consistent surfing opportunities during the autumn and winter months, while the summer is typically flat. It performs best when a strong west or northwest swell combines with offshore winds from the east or northeast. Most of the waves arrive in the form of grounded Atlantic swells, producing a variety of left and right-hand peaks across the shifting sandbars at the mouth of the Bassin d’Arcachon that can become extremely punchy and hollow when a solid swell is running. The surf is notably versatile and remains rideable at all stages of the tide, though it often provides the cleanest faces on a rising mid-tide. While it is a well-known spot in the Gironde region, the lineup can become busy when the conditions are optimal. Surfers should exercise caution and stay alert for hazards such as exceptionally strong tidal currents and shifting sandbars caused by the basin's outflow. The best conditions reported for surf at Cap Ferret Chenal occur when a West-northwest swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the East-northeast.
