Great Exhibition Bay, Northland, is an exposed beach break offering both left and right-hand waves, with reliable surf mostly generated by groundswells from the northeast. Offshore winds from the west create the cleanest conditions, especially around mid-tide when the tide is rising. Dangerous rips are a hazard, though the spot rarely gets crowded. The most consistent surf occurs in winter, particularly in January, when northeast swells combine with light offshore winds for optimal rideable waves.
