S-Turns in North Carolina is an exposed sandbar break known for its quality surf when conditions align. It works best when an east-southeast swell meets offshore winds from the west, producing well-formed waves primarily driven by groundswells. The break can become quite crowded during good swell events, attracting both locals and visitors. Despite its popularity, surfers should remain vigilant, as hazards include urchins, strong rip currents, man-made obstacles like buoys, and sharks. The most reliable conditions for clean, rideable surf occur during the summer, with August typically offering the best combination of swell and wind.
