Holden Beach in North Carolina is an exposed beach break with inconsistent surf, though summer typically brings the best conditions. It picks up a balanced mix of windswells and groundswells, with the ideal swell direction from the south and offshore winds from the north. The beach produces both left and right-hand waves, working best around high tide. Optimal surf occurs when south swells align with north winds. Autumn, particularly August, offers the most consistent clean waves. It’s a fairly popular spot that can get crowded at times—strong rip currents are a known hazard.
