Petites Dalles in Normandy is a relatively sheltered beach and reef break that offers its most consistent surfing opportunities during the autumn and winter months, while the summer is typically flat. It performs best when a strong northwest or west swell combines with offshore winds from the east or southeast. Most of the waves arrive in the form of local windswells, producing a variety of left and right-hand peaks across the pebbly shoreline that can become quite punchy when a solid swell is running. The surf is notably versatile and remains rideable at all stages of the tide, though it often provides the cleanest faces on a rising mid-tide. While it is rarely as crowded as the more popular regional breaks, the lineup can become busy when the conditions are optimal. Surfers should exercise caution and stay alert for hazards such as strong lateral currents and the rocky bottom near the cliffs. The best conditions reported for surf at Petites Dalles occur when a West-northwest swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the Southeast.
