π Local Knowledge
Te Oka Bay on the Banks Peninsula is a fairly exposed beach break with quite reliable surf that can work year-round. The best surf occurs with a south-southeast swell and offshore winds from the north, typically during winterβmost often in Mayβwhen clean, rideable waves are most consistent. Waves arrive from both local windswells and distant groundswells, producing left and right-hand beach break waves that work best around low tide. It is a fairly popular spot and can sometimes get crowded, so surfers should beware of strong rips and exposed rocks.
