Oaro in Kaikoura is an exposed beach break that has fairly consistent surf, although summer tends to be mostly flat. The best conditions occur when a South-southeast groundswell combines with an offshore wind direction from the West-northwest. The beach break offers both lefts and rights and can sometimes be crowded. Surfers should be aware of hazards such as rips, rocks, and sharks. The best time of year for surfing Oaro with consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of June.
