📍 Local Knowledge

Meatworks in Kaikoura is an exposed beach and reef break that has quite reliable surf, although summer tends to be mostly flat. The best conditions occur when a Southeast swell, consisting of windswells and groundswells in equal measure, combines with an offshore wind direction from the West. The beach offers both left and right hand waves, alongside both left and right hand reef breaks offshore. When it is working here, it can get crowded, and surfers should beware of hazards such as rips, rocks, and sharks. The best time of year for surfing Meatworks with consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of June.
