📍 Local Knowledge

Mangamaunu in Kaikoura is an exposed point break that has very reliable surf, although summer tends to be mostly flat. The best conditions occur when a Southeast swell, which is typically a mix of groundswells and windswells, combines with an offshore wind direction from the West. The break performs best around mid tide when the tide is rising and is unlikely to be too crowded, even when the surf is up. Surfing here requires negotiating dangerous rips. The best time of year for surfing Mangamaunu with consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of June.
