Leithfield Beach in Kaikoura is an exposed beach break that has quite reliable surf, although summer tends to be mostly flat. The best conditions occur when a South-southeast swell, which is just as likely to come from local windswells as from distant groundswells, combines with an offshore wind direction from the West-northwest. The beach break offers both left and right-hand waves and performs best around low tide. It is unlikely to be too crowded, even when the surf is up. The best time of year for surfing Leithfield Beach with consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of July.
