📍 Local Knowledge

Fields in Canterbury is an exposed beach and point break that has inconsistent surf, with summer in particular tending to be flat. The best conditions occur when a South-southeast swell, which is typically a mix of windswells and groundswells in equal measure, combines with an offshore wind direction from the West-northwest. The beach peaks offer both left and right-hand waves and provide good surf at all stages of the tide. It is rarely crowded, though surfers should be wary of rocks and respect private access as crossing farmland to reach the break is strictly prohibited. The best time of year for consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of June.
