📍 Local Knowledge

Clarence River in Kaikoura is an exposed point and rivermouth break that has consistent surf, although summer tends to be mostly flat. The best conditions occur when a Southeast swell, consisting of windswells and groundswells in equal measure, combines with an offshore wind direction from the Southwest. The break is known for providing good surf at all stages of the tide and is rarely crowded. Surfers should be cautious of dangerous rips, which are a common hazard at this location. The best time of year for consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of June.
