πŸ“ Local Knowledge

Catlins River Mouth in the Catlins is a quite exposed beach break with fairly consistent surf and can be surfed year-round. The best surf occurs with a south-southeast swell and offshore winds from the northwest, typically during winterβ€”most often in Juneβ€”when clean, rideable waves are most common. Windswells and groundswells are equally likely, the beach produces both lefts and rights, and it is surfable across all stages of the tide. The area is very rarely crowded, but surfers should take care due to strong rips and the potential presence of sharks.
