📍 Local Knowledge

Blue Duck Stream in Kaikoura is an exposed beach break that has dependable surf, although summer tends to be mostly flat. The best conditions occur when a Southeast swell, consisting of windswells and groundswells in equal measure, combines with an offshore wind direction from the West-northwest. The beach break offers both left and right hand waves and provides good surf at all stages of the tide. It is unlikely to be too crowded, even when the surf is up, though surfers should be aware that dangerous rips are a hazard here. The best time of year for surfing Blue Duck Stream with consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of July.
