📍 Local Knowledge

Amberley Beach in Canterbury is an exposed beach break that has quite reliable surf and can work at any time of the year. The best conditions occur when an East-southeast swell, which is equally likely to be groundswell or windswell, combines with an offshore wind direction from the West-northwest. There is no shelter from cross-shore breezes here, and the break is easily blown out by onshore winds. The beach offers both left and right-handers and remains uncrowded even when it is working. Surfers should be prepared to negotiate dangerous rips at this location. The best time of year for consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of June.
