📍 Local Knowledge
Robin Hood Bay in Nelson is a fairly exposed beach break with a steep, stony shore that often results in unreliable waves and significant backwash, especially at high tide. The best conditions occur when a Southeast groundswell combines with an offshore wind direction from the Northwest, as the bay typically stays flat during the summer months. The beach offers both left and right-handers, with the southern end often providing the most power, and is best surfed at low tide to mitigate the backwash. While it is rarely crowded, surfers must negotiate dangerous rips and the physical challenge of a heavy paddle-out on bigger days. The best time of year for consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of June.
