📍 Local Knowledge

Owahanga in The Wairarapa is an exposed beach break that has quite reliable surf and can work at any time of the year. The best conditions occur when a Southeast groundswell combines with an offshore wind direction from the Northwest. There is no shelter from cross-shore breezes here, and the surf quality is poor in even light onshore winds. In addition to the beach break, there is a left-hand reef break, both of which provide good surf at all stages of the tide. It is rarely crowded here, though surfers should be aware that dangerous rips are a hazard. The best time of year for surfing Owahanga with consistent, clean waves is during autumn, particularly the month of May.
