📍 Local Knowledge

Waipio Valley on the Big Island is an exposed river break offering reasonably consistent surf throughout the year, with winter producing the most dependable conditions. The break works best when a north swell aligns with offshore winds from the south-southwest, delivering quality waves across all tide stages. Expect both power and shape when it's on, though the lineup can get crowded. Surfers should be mindful of strong rips, submerged rocks, localism, and sharks in the area. January is typically the prime month for clean, rideable waves at Waipio Valley.
