π Local Knowledge
The Point at PunaluΚ»u on the Big Island is an exposed reef break known for its fairly consistent surf and left-hand waves. While summer brings favorable surf conditions, the spot actually performs best when a southeast swell pairs with offshore winds from the northwest. Fueled by distant groundswells, the wave breaks over a sharp reef that demands caution. Hazards include urchins, strong rips, and submerged rocks, along with occasional localism. Although summer is often reliable, January typically sees the cleanest and most consistent surf, making it a prime month for scoring quality waves here.
