📍 Local Knowledge

Sixtynine in Big Island is a fairly exposed beach break known for its reliable winter surf and approachable wave setup. The break works best when a west-northwest swell pairs with offshore winds from the east-southeast, producing clean lefts and rights. It handles groundswells better than windswells and offers rideable waves across various conditions. Crowds can build when the surf is firing, so expect company in the lineup. Hazards include rips and sharks. January is typically the prime month for scoring consistent, clean waves at Sixtynine.
