📍 Local Knowledge

Punaluu on the Big Island is an exposed beach and reef break that offers fairly consistent surf, especially during summer months. However, the spot comes alive when a southeast swell meets offshore winds from the northwest, producing clean, rideable waves. The setup includes both right-peeling beach breaks and a left-hand reef, offering variety for different skill levels. While not typically crowded, surfers should be cautious of strong rips and the presence of sharks. Although summer often sees favorable conditions, January is considered the best month for scoring consistently clean surf at Punaluu.
