📍 Local Knowledge
Pohoiki on the Big Island is an exposed reef break with fairly consistent surf and the ability to work throughout the year. It performs best when an east swell aligns with offshore winds from the west-northwest, offering clean, rideable waves. The setup provides both left and right reef breaks, accommodating a variety of styles and skill levels. While the break handles both groundswells and windswells, it can draw a crowd when conditions are good. Hazards include sharp rocks, urchins, territorial locals, and sharks. September is typically the prime month for scoring consistent, clean surf at Pohoiki.
