📍 Local Knowledge

Old Kona Airport State Park in Big Island is a fairly exposed beach and reef break known for its reliable surf and year-round potential. It performs best during winter, particularly in January, when a west-northwest swell meets offshore winds from the east. The waves offer both lefts and rights and tend to break best around high tide. While the spot can draw a crowd, there's generally enough room to find a wave. Be cautious of common hazards including urchins, rips, rocks, and localism.
