📍 Local Knowledge
Ma'alaea in Maui is a fairly exposed reef break with unreliable surf. Summer is the best time of year for surfing here. When it does break, conditions are best when a south swell pairs with offshore winds from the north-northwest, producing clean left and better right-hand reef breaks. This spot works best around mid tide and is sometimes crowded when it's working. Hazards include rocks and boats, so use caution. While not the most dependable location, the month of January tends to offer the best chance for consistent, clean waves.
