Kuau Pipes in Maui is an exposed reef break with reasonably consistent surf. Winter is the optimum time of year for surfing here. When it's working, conditions are best when a north-northeast swell pairs with offshore winds from the southeast, producing a clean left-hand reef break. This spot is surfable at all stages of the tide and very rarely gets crowded. Hazards include urchins and rips, so use caution. While it's a dependable location, the month of September tends to offer the best chance for consistent, clean waves.
