📍 Local Knowledge

Kolekole in Big Island is an exposed river break known for its fairly consistent surf and reliable conditions during winter. The spot performs best when east-northeast swells meet offshore winds from the west-southwest, producing clean, powerful waves. Tidal changes have little effect on wave quality, and while the break can get busy when it's firing, the lineup usually remains manageable. Hazards include strong rips, rocky sections, man-made obstacles like buoys, pollution, and the occasional presence of sharks. July often brings the most consistent and surfable conditions.
